HorizonForce: A Next-Generation Solution for Wildfire Detection, Monitoring, and Elimination

Abstract

HorizonForce is a next-generation, end-to-end solution to detect, monitor, and eliminate wildfires. HorizonForce consists of three key technologies that operate in sequence to prevent wildfires. At a high level, our system first uses a network of low-cost physical IoT sensors that we have developed (cover page, top left image) to detect emerging wildfires as early as possible. It then leverages NASA MODIS and VIIRS satellite imagery to accurately localize these wildfires and monitor their spread. Finally, our system leverages high-payload UAVs to autonomously respond to and eliminate the emerging wildfire before it gets out of hand (our prototype on cover page, bottom left image). The HorizonForce team consists of two highly capable and driven students at two North Carolina MSIs, UNC Pembroke and North Carolina A&T. Both team members have strong technical backgrounds in hardware engineering and software design, and have an exceptional track record of entrepreneurial success in previous related ventures. The team is highly capable, motivated, and represents some of the top young engineering and business talent from MSIs.
